Learning the Difference Between Fittings and Adapters

There are many crucial tools in the world of plumbing that serve unique and irreplaceable functions. Every network of pipes has essential pieces that can be replaced, upgraded and repaired to keep the water flowing at ideal rates. Two of these pieces, however, can be confused by amateurs or those who lack practical time with their tools. These are Fittings and Adapters. Though the terminology may be used interchangeably, the two pieces are very different and serve different functions in any given pipework.

What are Fittings?

Fittings are the joining parts that connect hard machine parts to tubes and other pipes. They must be fit onto one end securely and join with a larger component. The other end is then used to attach hoses, nozzles or pipes that otherwise couldn’t connect to the core component that they are leading into. These can also bridge between different standard measurements, allowing ORB ends to connect with JIC ends, as well as leading male-to-male connections if necessary.

The function of a Fitting is to be easily replaceable or mobile from its core connection. It allows outer components to be more easily swapped out, if a new hose or pipe requires a different end to meet the core component, a fitting can bridge the gap immediately as long as it has the correct ends.

What are Adapters?

Adapters are components which join two or more component ends, or threads, together. They are T-shaped, Cross-shaped or occasionally just simple two-ended components which allow for an easy transfer between multiple different component standards.

Adapters are used for much more complex workings that need multiple connections going to and from a single component. Pumps that need to send fluid to multiple sources from a single output require adapters to make all of those connections. Adapters are also made specifically to bridge between different component standards, allowing exchange between SAE, JIC, ORB, Metric, NPT and other classifications.

Why the Confusion?

The main confusion comes from the shared terminology of the two components. Adapters can function as fittings, in that they can only connect two pieces together, but not all adapters are fittings because many adapters are made to connect more than two things together, or have more than one component end type that need to lead into one another. There’s also the core function of bridging component standards that normally aren’t compatible. Fittings are normally used with like standards, serving as a bridge between two threads that aren’t compatible by nature. A fitting is needed for a hose to connect to a pump. An adapter is needed to connect the pump to more than one hose, where each hose may be of a different standard.

In some cases, the job of fittings and adapters can be interchangeable, and the choice of component comes down to availability. Fittings are the first tool you should consider for what goes into an open port, and adapters should be used in later stages of plumbing to make the whole system flow together.

A good, tight, even crimp secures the hose connector in place and allows the fluid to move through freely without leaks. To properly crimp your hose, you’ll need a crimper that is designed for use on a specific hose diameter. You should choose your crimper based on the hose you’ll be using, not the other way around.

When assembling your hydraulic hose setup, you should choose an appropriate hose based on a few factors: size, temperature, application, media and pressure. While these factors are all important to the functionality of your hydraulic system, size dictates which crimper you’ll use to secure the fitting . The hose size is measured in diameter, and the one you choose can affect the cost, pressure capability, rate of flow, and operational efficiency.

The Tools

To crimp a hydraulic hose, you can use one of two methods: hand crimping or hydraulic crimping. Heavy-duty motorized equipment is built to be tough. But even the toughest materials can lose their strength with prolonged use. So with all the wear and tear your equipment goes through, how can you prevent your hydraulic hoses from failing? First, you must understand what’s causing the issue.

Seven Reasons Why Hydraulic Hoses Fail

Abrasion

The number one cause of hydraulic hose failure is abrasion. Because these hoses expand and retract during use, they’re constantly moving and are therefore more prone to rubbing. The more the hose rubs, the weaker the materials become. Leaks occur when the outer hose cover is entirely worn away by abrasion, exposing the steel wire reinforcements inside. Fortunately, it’s relatively simple to prevent abrasion on your hydraulic hose. Many manufacturers add plasticizers to the hose cover textile to make it hardier. You can also easily cover any problem areas on your hose with a nylon sleeve or plastic guard.

Routing Issues

Poor routing can expose parts of your hose to increased abrasion. When laying down your hydraulic hose, try to avoid routing it through high-friction or high-temperature areas and pivot points. Be aware of the hose’s minimum bend radius, as excessive bending can cause future issues and eventual hose failure. If you think it will be moving a lot, try using a swivel at the end of it.

Improper Fittings

The fitting, where the hose meets the crimp seal, can also be a frequent source of failure. If the hose bends too closely to the fitting, whether due to the weight of the hose or poorly planned routing, it won’t work correctly. You can fix this with a bend restrictor, a simple plastic product that helps to support the hose around the fitting.

Heat Exposure

High temperatures are not a hydraulic hose’s friend, and when they’re exposed to high heat, they can start to stiffen and lose flexibility. Heat aging, or prolonged exposure to high temps, can cause hoses to splinter from the inside out. If you bend a hose and hear a crack, and it doesn’t bounce back to its usual shape, your hose is experiencing heat aging. Route carefully (see above), and consider buying a heat sleeve for your hose to prevent this.

Installation

Good hose maintenance starts at installation. When they’re installed, the hoses must be cut to size, then thoroughly flushed to clean out any debris that may be left inside. Then the fittings should be crimped, and finally, the hose should be clamped. If you don’t install it correctly, the hose won’t work as it should.

Fluid Compatibility

Not all fluid is compatible with all hoses. Even a high-quality hydraulic hose can start to erode if it’s used with the wrong types of fluid - the fluid can disintegrate the insides of the hose, which slowly start to swell. If a leak occurs, you may have some serious particulate contamination in your hydraulic system.

Erosion

It’s not just incompatible fluid that can damage your hoses. High-velocity fluids rushing through your hose can also start to wear away at its insides. It’s important to choose a hose that is suited to the expected velocity of the fluid inside.

Flagrant disregard for or repeated failure to meet OSHA regulations can result in a range of penalties . The most common punishment for OSHA violations is hefty fines, which typically depend on the severity of the violation, and whether it’s your first offense. In the worst-case scenario—that is, a serious injury or even death of an employee—the employer responsible for the OSHA violation can be fined and even imprisoned.

Categorizing Fall Prevention

OSHA guidelines for construction job sites organize fall protection measures into four main categories : fall arrest, positioning, retrieval, and suspension.

Fall Arrest

Any time there is a fall hazard present on a worksite, a fall arrest system has to be in place to protect the worker. OSHA defines a ‘fall hazard’ as any drop of six or more feet from a walking or working surface to the surface below. Common examples of job site fall hazards include elevated scaffolding and rooftop work. To combat the dangers of a fall hazard, a worker should be outfitted with fall arrest equipment , such as a full-body harness.

A typical body harness should support up to 310 lbs. of combined tool and body weight. The harness is used in conjunction with a securely installed anchor point and a lanyard joining the two. In the event of a fall, the arrest system will prevent the worker from hitting the surface below. A good arrest system can dramatically reduce the risk of falls and impact-related workplace injuries.

Positioning

As the name suggests, positioning is all about how the worker positions their body while working. To meet OSHA standards, an employee working in a fall hazard situation should be equipped with a harness system that positions them safely and comfortably, leaving both hands free to work. Positioning systems must be used together with fall arrest systems, as they aren’t designed to prevent falls on their own.

Retrieval

What happens after a fall? If it does happen to a worker, there should be a plan in place to recover them. OSHA guidelines don’t specify how to do this - only that all job sites are required to have a rescue plan for workers caught in the fall arrest system.

Suspension

If your employees are working at great heights, suspension equipment should be provided to help them move around hands-free. A perfect example of this is the suspended scaffolding used in commercial window washing. Again, suspension should be used in conjunction with fall arrest systems.

Here at Action Supply Houston we do not stand alone, and with the help of strategic partnerships, our business becomes more efficient and versatile. Action Supply is an authorized distributor for Eaton’s quick disconnect couplings, and they are a big part of our business. These disconnect couplings are beneficial for quickly disconnecting hose-lines without the loss of fluid or entrance of air contaminants into the system. Another notable aspect of Eaton’s products is the variety of design options. The ball lock design uses a series of balls inside the socket to lock down into the groove on the plug. The Flat face design can be wiped clean and does a better job of retaining fluids. Eaton’s most common option for high-pressure applications is the screw-to-connect design which can handle pressures of 3500-10,000 psi. Action Supply makes sure that you will have access to reliable equipment to ensure your hydraulic applications are implemented safely and effectively.
